SIRE REFERENCE
SCAT DADDY (USA) (2004). Retired to Stud in 2008 with 5 wins for £716,915 (5½f - 9f) including The Champagne Stakes, Belmont Park, Gr.1, Florida Derby, Gulfstream Park, Gr.1, Fountain of Youth Stakes, Gulfstream Park, Gr.2, Sanford Stakes, Saratoga, Gr.2, second in Hopeful Stakes, Saratoga, Gr.1, third in Holy Bull Stakes, Gulfstream Park, Gr.3.
Scat Daddy entered stud in 2008 at Ashford Stud (Coolmore America) in Lexington, Kentucky. He also shuttled to Coolmore Australia in 2008 and to Haras Paso Nevado in Chile in 2009-2011 for the Southern Hemisphere breeding season. He was the leading Chile freshman sire three times (2009-2011). He initially commanded a $30,000 stud fee for a live foal. The most heart-breaking aspect is that Scat Daddy’s death in December 2015 meant that he was denied his chance of covering elite mares in 2016, when his fee had been set at $100,000. His eight crops have so far produced 183 Stakes performers, with more, surely, still to come. Scat Daddy is now the unchallenged heir to the legacy of Storm Cat. He was the leading North American freshman sire of 2011, and remained a success for his entire stud career. In 2015, Scat Daddy broke the North American record for the number of juvenile stakes winners in a season with nine. The previous record of 8 had been set by his great-grandsire Storm Cat in 2002.
A multiple champion sire in Chile, whose progeny were named Horse Of The Year in both Chile and the USA, Scat Daddy left behind 136 stakes winners, including more than 30 Gr.1 winners. His progeny have earned in excess of $260 million and include US Triple Crown winner Justify. The sire of Gr1 winners on both dirt and turf, Scat Daddy is showing signs of becoming a major sire of sires, making his premature death all the more regrettable. An example of this can be seen by the fact that the last two Gr1 Juddmonte Cheveley Park Stakes have both been won by daughters of a Scat Daddy stallion. Scat Daddy’s Gr1 Prix Morny winning son No Nay Never is the sire of 2020 Cheveley Park heroine Alcohol Free, while Scat Daddy’s dual Gr1 winning son Caravaggio is responsible for this year’s impressive Cheveley Park queen Tenebrism. Alcohol Free has gone on to capture both the Gr1 Coronation Stakes and Gr1 Qatar Sussex Stakes this year, with her sire No Nay Never also sire of this year Gr2 Sky Bet Lowther Stakes/Gr3 Princess Margaret Keeneland Stakes winner Zain Claudette and Gr3 Markel Molecomb Stakes winner Armor.
In total, No Nay Never (Leading First Season Sire in GB/Ireland in 2018) has been responsible for more than 30 black type winners, including the Coolmore based dual Gr1 winner Ten Sovereigns. His paternal half-brother Caravaggio has made a fine start with his first two-year-olds. At the time of writing, the son of Scat Daddy’s first crop is headed by the aforementioned Tenebrism and dual group winner Agartha, as well as the stakes winners Dizzy Bizu and Her World. Caravaggio went close to having a Gr1 first crop double, with his daughter Agartha beaten just three-parts of a length when second in the recent Gr1 Moyglare Stud Stakes.
Another Scat Daddy son El Kabeir (winner of the Gr2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes, Gr3 Gotham Stakes, and Gr3 Jerome Stakes) has also made a pleasing start with his first crop this year. El Kabeir’s early winners are headed by Listed winners Don Chicco and Masekela – with the latter also second in the G2 Superlative Stakes Caravaggio heads the Leading First Season Sires List in Ireland where El Kabeir is eighth. With the likes of Justify (whose yearlings made up to $1.55 million at the recent Keeneland September Yearling Sale), brilliant UAE Derby winner Mendelssohn, and Gr1 Phoenix Stakes hero Sioux Nation yet to have runners, it is hard not to believe that Scat Daddy’s already impressive record as a sire of sires will further be handsomely enhanced over the coming years. His ongoing success also continues to bolster the strength of the potent Storm Cat male line, whose other star current representatives include multiple US champion sire Into Mischief (already sire of promising and successful sires Goldencents and Practical Joke) and top Irish sire Lope De Vega. Also broodmare sire of the Breeders’ Cup Sprint winning champion Whitmore, Scat Daddy had a South African connection -his Gr1 Hopeful Stakes winning grandsire Hennessy is out of Gr3 Adirondack Stakes runner up Island Kitty, the latter a daughter of the South African champion Hawaii.
An interesting aspect of Scat Daddy’s stallion career is that the 37 Graded/Group winners from his northern hemisphere crops have as many as 36 different broodmare sires. This underlines Scat Daddy’s versatility, which also extends to his progeny’s distance requirements and to the surfaces on which they race. Although Scat Daddy was inbred 4 x 2 to Mr. Prospector, a sizeable amount of his success has come from Mr. Prospector line mares. Two of his best daughters–the Grade I winners Lady Aurelia and Hamonize are respectively inbred 4 x 3 and 4 x 4 to Storm Cat, the great-grandsire of Scat Daddy. So Perfect has three distant lines to Mr. Prospector, in addition to 4 x 3 inbreeding to Storm Cat. Speaking of his premature death, Fergus Galvin of Hunter Valley Farm where Scat Daddy was raised, summed up the regret felt by many breeders. "It was just such a shame," he said. "You hate any stallion to pass away, but when he died, he was just on the crest of a wave. To think what he could have accomplished with proper Grade 1 mares, which he would have been getting, it could be staggering. It's staggering already – the fact that he had such international appeal, the fact that his offspring could literally run on any surface and at any distance.
